Frequently Asked Questions
- What is the difference between a Resident Assistant (RA) and a Resident Director (RD)?
- Resident Assistants (RAs) live in different hallways throughout the Residence Halls.
They act as extensions of the Office of Residence Life where they help residents check
in and out of their rooms, help residents work through roommate conflict, plan activities,
and help all students understand and follow both Residence Life and Snow College policy.
RAs are on duty each night in the Residence Halls where they plan activities and act
as a resource to students with questions or concerns. Each Residence Hall community
has between 4-8 RAs. There is one Resident Director (RD) for each Residence Hall community.
The RD directly supervises the RA Staff in the building, along with managing all administrative
duties in maintaining the building. RDs conduct weekly staff meetings with their RAs,
assist with a rotating emergency on-call schedule, along with working in the Office
of Residence Life four (4) hours each week and their building office for one (1) hour
each week.
- What are the benefits of being an RD?
- Leadership Training
- Professional Development
- Valuable Resume Experience
- Free Family Style Apartment in an Assigned Residence Hall
- $3,800 Leadership Scholarship for the Academic Year
- Can I choose what building I work in as an RD?
- No. The Office of Residence Life determines where you will work/live. However, during
the interview process you will be asked your preferences in buildings which is taken
strongly into consideration.
- What is a Cover Letter?
- A Cover Letter is a letter of intent. A Cover Letter is typically addressed to the
Hiring Manager and explains why you are applying for the position and what qualifications
you have that suggest you would do well in the position. Try to point out experiences
and qualifications that are not already spelled out on your Resume to help the Hiring
Manager get to know you and what makes you a good fit for the position. Cover Letters
should not be more than one page.
- What is a Resume?
- A Resume is a professional report of your experience, skills, and educational background.
You will want to keep a clean and professional format, but be original! As you create
your Resume it is important to review the job description. Use the job description
as a type of checklist to make sure you point out how you meet each of the qualifications
listed for the position. Resumes should be no more than one page.
- Who should I ask to be a Reference for my application?
- Avoid having a parent or other family member complete a form. Current staff members
of the Office of Residence Life should not complete forms for you either. Use references
who can give credible opinions of your leadership abilities, work ethic, and potential
to succeed in the position. Past/current employers, current or past advisors/mentors,
or current/past instructors from college or high school are good examples of professional
references.
- What kind of picture should I submit?
- You should submit a semi-professional headshot photo in color. Make sure it will help
us recognize the candidate we meet in the interview process!
- How can I prepare for the Resident Director Interview?
- The individual interview is a professional interview, but don't be intimidated! Personal
interviews are used to get to know candidates better, evaluate their ability to communicate,
handle pressure, and learn more about their leadership experience and goals. Review
the RD responsibilities and qualifications frequently and discuss the position with
current RDs. All of this will prepare you for your interview. As a reminder, the interview
is done in a professional setting so professional dress is expected.
- I don't currently live on-campus or have never lived on-campus before, can I still
apply?
- Yes! It is not required to have previously lived on-campus to be a Resident Director.
We have valued the opinions and experiences that Resident Directors in the past have
brought with them from living off-campus as a student.
- I am or will be married by the start of next year, can I still apply?
- Yes! Our RDs can be single or married students. Only one Resident Director is hired
per community (this totals to 4 Resident Directors) and the person hired must be a
student according to the guidelines mentioned in the qualifications section above.
Spouses of RDs are not required to be students.
- What if my cumulative GPA is close to the 3.0 minimum, but still lower. Can I still
apply?
- You may still apply; However, you will be asked about it in an interview so be prepared
to explain how you will get your GPA up and be able to maintain it with the additional
responsibilities that come with being an RD. Understand that candidates who do meet
the GPA requirement will be considered first, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't
apply!
- What resources should I use for the Case Study Essay?
- For the Case Study Essay, it is not expected that you be well-versed in our policies
and expectations. However, that does not mean you should not use them as a reference!
You may access our Housing Policy Guide or the Snow College Code of Conduct through
Snow College's website. You may also ask current staff members for advice. Let your
natural leadership characteristics show as you explain what you would do in the given
situation.
